DR Congo knocks out defending champions Egypt to reach AFCON 2023 quarter-finals

In a thrilling match on Sunday, DR Congo beat Egypt 8-7 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The two teams were tied 1-1 after regular time, with Egypt’s Mohamed Salah scoring first in the 54th minute and DR Congo’s Dieumerci Mbokani equalizing in the 72nd minute.

DR Congo are two-time African Cup of Nations champions, having won in 1968 and 1974. They will face Guinea in the quarter-finals.

The match was a major upset, as Egypt were the favorites to win the tournament. They had won the African Cup of Nations a record 7 times, and they were led by Mohamed Salah, one of the best players in the world.

DR Congo, on the other hand, were not considered to be one of the favorites. They had not won the African Cup of Nations since 1974, and they were ranked 68th in the world by FIFA.

The victory is a major achievement for DR Congo. It is their first time reaching the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations since 2015.

They will face Guinea in the quarter-finals.

The match will be played on Thursday, February 2nd.
