Former Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Lowassa Dies at 70

Edward Lowassa, a former Prime Minister of Tanzania, died on February 10, 2024, at the Jakaya Kikwete Heart Institute in Dar es Salaam. He was 70 years old.

Lowassa was born in 1953 in the Monduli District of Arusha Region. He studied political science at the University of Dar es Salaam and then worked as a teacher and journalist before entering politics.

Lowassa was elected to Parliament in 1990 and served in various ministerial positions in the government of President Ali Hassan Mwinyi. In 2005, he was appointed Prime Minister by President Jakaya Kikwete.

Lowassa served as Prime Minister for three years before resigning in 2008 due to a corruption scandal. He later returned to politics and was the presidential candidate for the Chadema party in the 2015 elections.

Lowassa was a popular and charismatic figure in Tanzanian politics. He was known for his intelligence, his wit, and his ability to connect with people.

His death is a great loss to Tanzania. He will be remembered as a talented politician and a dedicated public servant.
