Heavy Rains Cause Damage and Displacement in Karatu (Mafuriko Arusha)

Continuous rains across Tanzania have had a significant impact on the Karatu district in Arusha region, causing some homes to be submerged and surrounded by water, leaving residents homeless.

As a result of this challenge, some have been forced to seek rental housing, while others have gone to schools or relocated to live with relatives.

The rains, which began last week, are reported to have affected various areas in the district, including the Qurus and Karatu wards.

Some residents appealed to the government to look into ways to assist them promptly before the damage worsens.

Jeneth Mfanya, a resident of Bwawani Street, said she has been forced to rent a house after her own home was flooded.

She explained that the rain that started last week has had a significant impact on them, as besides her house being flooded, the salon she relied on for income has also been flooded, and she has only managed to save a few items.

The situation highlights the need for prompt and effective disaster response measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and floods on communities. The government should work closely with affected residents to provide immediate assistance and support, including temporary shelter, food aid, and livelihood restoration efforts.
