New Arusha Stadium with 30,000 Capacity to Begin Construction in March (Uwanja Mpya)

The assessment for the construction of a new sports stadium in Arusha has been completed, and we are now in the agreement stage with the contractor. Upon completion, the stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 and will be used for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“We are in the final stages with the contractor for the construction of the Arusha stadium,” said Mayay. “By December 2025, CAF will come to inspect, and it will be ready.”

Construction of the stadium is expected to begin in March 2024. Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, the countries co-hosting AFCON 2027, are each required to have three international-standard stadiums. Tanzania already has the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and the Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, so the stadium to be built in Arusha will be the third.

Mayay made this statement on February 14, 2024, while contributing to the Mwananchi Space discussion organized by Mwananchi Communications Ltd, with the theme “What has Tanzania learned through AFCON 2023, in preparation for 2027?”

The discussion aimed to evaluate Tanzania’s success in hosting AFCON 2023 and to learn important lessons that will help the country prepare well for AFCON 2027.

The construction of the new Arusha stadium is a crucial step in Tanzania’s preparations for AFCON 2027. The stadium will help promote sports in the country and will also bring economic opportunities to the Arusha region and Tanzania as a whole.
