Simba SC Parts Ways with Coach Abdelhak Benchikha, Mgunda Takes Over

Simba SC has announced the departure of their Algerian head coach, Abdelhak Benchikha, just one day after the team lifted the Muungano Cup in Zanzibar. Juma Mgunda has been appointed as the interim coach.

The club’s decision to part ways with Benchikha is reportedly due to personal family issues in Algeria. Benchikha’s tenure lasted for 156 days since his appointment on November 24, 2023, taking over from Robertinho Oliveira.

Robertinho’s departure came on November 7, 2023, shortly after the team suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to arch-rivals Yanga SC, ending their unbeaten run that had stretched since a 1-0 loss to Azam FC on October 27, 2022.

During his time at the helm, Benchikha oversaw the team in 21 matches across various competitions, including the Tanzanian Premier League, CAF Champions League, Azam Federation Cup (ASFC), and the recently revived Muungano Cup.

Under Benchikha’s guidance, Simba SC scored 30 goals and conceded 13 in those 21 matches.

Juma Mgunda Takes Charge

Juma Mgunda, a former Simba SC player and assistant coach, will step in as the interim coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Mgunda has a good understanding of the team’s dynamics and is expected to provide stability during this transition period.

Simba SC’s management has expressed their gratitude to Benchikha for his contributions to the club and wished him well in his future endeavors. They have also pledged their full support to Mgunda as he takes charge of the team.
