William Chepkut Chirchir was the immediate former member of parliament for Ainabkoi constituency.

He was known to be very close to people in his constituency. At one point, he was pictured seated down and talking to members of his constituency. On another occasion, he led the people in the Jerusalema dance challenge during a wedding.

He also attended the flamboyant wedding Of DP Ruto’s daughter, June Ruto to Nigerian husband Alexander Ezenagu. Chepkut once said that he wanted to challenge the belief that once leaders are elected they need to cut all social links.

Education Background

1997: Kenya School of Governance- Advanced Certificate in Supplies Management

1991 to 1992: Kenya Polytechnic (currently Technical University of Kenya)- Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management.

1992 to1995: Jabalpur University- Bachelor of Commerce.

2000: Kenya Institute of Administration- Certificate in Senior Public Administration.

2005: Egerton University- Certificate​ Course in Integrity

2003 to 2005: Kenyatta University- Master’s of Arts in Community Development and Organization.

Career

In 2017, he declared his interest to vie for the parliamentary seat of Ainabkoi constituency against the then MP Samuel Chepkonga. During nominations, he sought the seat under the Jubilee party ticket.

He won the nominations but the results were disputed leading to another election. In the second round, he was defeated by 90 votes. Nonetheless, he vied for the seat as an independent candidate and won it. In the previous 2013 general elections he had vied for this seat but lost.

As a Member of Parliament, he sponsored a number of bills including:

  • The coffee bill (Senate Bills No.22 of 2020)
  • The Natural Resources (Benefit Sharing) Bill (Senate Bills No.25 of 2020)
  • The Health Amendment Bill (Senate Bill No.26 of 2020)
  • The Basic Education Amendment Bill (Senate Bills No.4 of 2021)
  • The Kenya Sign Language Bill (Senate Bills No.5 of 2011).
  • The county Vocational Education and Training Bill (Senate Bill No.6 of 2021.

Apart from being an MP, he was also the vice chairman of the Special Funds Accounts Committee and a member of Committee on Appointments.

From 1997 to 2003, he had a senior position at the office of the president. He worked as personal assistant/private secretary to Nicholas Biwott, who was a very powerful minister during the KANU era.

Illness

The MP had been receiving treatment at Mediheal hospital for two months in 2021 following an accident at a city hotel. According to the legislator, he missed a step at a staircase at rolled down injuring his knees.

Chepkut was told he needed to undergo surgery to treat his knee after he went to Dubai for further consultations.

He underwent a 36 hour surgery on his legs and injured arm.

Wealth

Chepkut is said to be a rich man who is in possession of a number of cars and properties.

In 2019, an article by The Standard said he was at risk of losing his hotel in Uasin Gishu after defaulting on loan payments of about Ksh 10 million. The hotel, Royalton, is a three star hotel located off Nairobi Eldoret highway.

However, William Chepkut was pronounced dead on 8th October 2022 after he was rushed to Mediheal hospital in Parklands. Reast Easy Champ!
