Did Rayvanny and Erick Mzava Steal from Kayumba? Read

Rising artist Kayumba has publicly accused popular musician Rayvanny and video director Erick Mzava of mishandling funds. Kayumba claims to have paid them TZS 7 million for a music video for his song “SHAKE” (from the album “FINE TAPE”). However, the video was never made.

In an Instagram post, Kayumba detailed his experience:

“I am one of the artists who fight for their dreams day and night without a label here in Tanzania. It’s God, the media, and my fans who love my music that keep me in people’s ears to this day.

Today I will tell you something you never knew and I will tell you why I posted these two.

In February last year, I had my album project called (FINE TAPE). There are several collaborations on it, including SHAKE where I featured my brother Rayvanny. For that collaboration, I was supposed to look for TZS 7 million which I was told by Director Elly Mzava, who would shoot the video.

I looked for the TZS 7 million for Mzava and handed it over to him inside the Next Level Music offices in Mbezi Beach, believing I would get something good to give my fans. But that was not the case.

Instead, the runaround started after giving them the money and the video we agreed on was never made until today. They took my money without considering that I am a young man who is fighting for my dreams with all my strength.

But I didn’t get tired, I also tried to reach out to Rayvan’s management and I spoke to them several times but my efforts didn’t bear fruit and I was seen as a nuisance for claiming my rights as a poor person.

Now I have decided to post here on my Instagram, not to humiliate them, no.

But I have done this so that my fans know that I have been wronged, but also I ask the government of President Samia Suluhu Hassan to look into this if there is any help for me to get my justice, then I should be helped or we should fight this together because I have endured enough waiting for my justice and I am not getting it.”

Questions Remain

  • How will Rayvanny and Erick Mzava respond to Kayumba’s allegations?
  • Will Mzava repay the remaining money to Kayumba?
  • Will this incident lead to changes in the Tanzanian music industry?
