Former Tanzanian President, Ally Hassan Mwinyi, Died at 98

Dar es Salaam, February 29, 2024 – In a somber announcement today, Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan confirmed the passing of the Second President of Tanzania, Ally Hassan Mwinyi. The revered statesman breathed his last on February 29, 2024, at 11:30 PM in Dar es Salaam’s hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan revealed that Mzee Mwinyi had been receiving medical attention since November 2023, initially in London, United Kingdom, and later in Tanzania at Mzena Hospital. The battle against lung cancer proved challenging, leading to his unfortunate demise.

President Samia, in her announcement, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former leader and praised Mzee Mwinyi’s dedication to his nation. She recounted his years of service, highlighting his contributions to Tanzania’s development and regional stability.

The late President Mwinyi, aged 89, had served as Tanzania’s head of state during the second phase of his presidency, leaving an indelible mark on the nation. He was widely respected for his leadership and commitment to fostering unity and progress.

In light of this significant loss, President Samia Suluhu Hassan declared a period of mourning, with seven days dedicated to honoring the memory of the late President.
