Kaizer Chiefs Defender Luke Fleurs Killed in Shooting

BBC has reported that, South African Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the death of defender Luke Fleurs, who was shot and killed in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

The 24-year-old was at a petrol station in the suburb of Honeydew when he was attacked. According to police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, witnesses reported that Fleurs was ordered out of his car by the assailants before being shot and killed.

Fleurs had joined Kaizer Chiefs in October 2023 from SuperSport United, where he had spent five years. He had yet to make a competitive appearance for the club.

Born on March 3, 2000, Fleurs began his football career in 2013 when he joined the Ubuntu Cape Town academy. He went on to play for SuperSport United’s reserve team before making his senior debut in 2019.

Fleurs’ death has been met with shock and sadness by the South African football community. Kaizer Chiefs have expressed their condolences to his family and friends, describing him as “a talented young player with a bright future ahead of him.”

The club has also confirmed that they will be providing support to Fleurs’ family during this difficult time.
